PNG finished third after a thrilling victory over the United States, while Uganda and Jersey also won to finish fifth and seventh, respectively during the T20 World Cup day 5.
Toss: The United States chose to field first.
The USA bowling attack delivered an outstanding performance, limiting PNG to a low score. The entire bowling unit was on point, as PNG’s batting innings never got going. Only opener Lega Siaka (28) was able to put up a fight. The rest of the scorecard was bleak for PNG, who were all out for 97 in 16.3 overs. Juan Theron, Nisarg Patel, and Vatsal Vaghela each took two wickets for the United States.
In response, PNG fought valiantly with the ball to secure a tense victory. At 36/6, they had the USA in all sorts of trouble, a situation from which they would never fully recover. Chad Soper and Assad Vala would each take three wickets to do the majority of the damage. Only Vatsal Vaghela (29) could make a significant contribution with the bat for the USA. In the end, the match was decided in the final over, with PNG winning by five runs.
This effectively ended their tournament, in which they finished third.
Uganda vs. Hong Kong in the fifth-place playoff
Toss: Hong Kong made the decision to compete in the race first
When Uganda batted first, the Hong Kong bowlers did a good job of keeping the scoring rate under control in Bulawayo. After the Ugandans got off to a good start with a 51-run stand from Simon Ssesazi and Ronak Patel, Hong Kong came back with vigour to reduce them to 80/5. The regular wicket-taking also meant that Uganda was never able to get going in their innings and speed up the proceedings. They finished with a score of 102/7 in 20 overs and would have a difficult task defending the score. Mohammad Ghazanfar (3/22) and Mohammad Aizaz Khan (2/14) were Hong Kong’s bowling selections.
In response, Hong Kong would get off to a disastrous start, as Uganda reduced them to 34/5 after 9.1 overs. None of the top five batters could muster a double-figure score, leaving Hong Kong in a state of limbo. Uganda was outstanding with the ball, controlling the run rate while also taking wickets. Juma Miyaji, in particular, caused a lot of problems for the batters.
It appeared that Hong Kong was doomed, but a collaboration between Zeeshan Ali and Shahid Wasif would provide a ray of hope. Hong Kong remained in contention until Bilal Hassun bowled Wasif out for 22. The match became a nail-biter when Hong Kong needed 12 off the final over. Hong Kong would make a strong start, scoring six runs in the first three deliveries. Cosmas Kyewuta, on the other hand, would take back-to-back wickets, giving Uganda a four-run victory.
Uganda would finish the tournament in fifth place if they won.
Jersey vs. Singapore in the 7th Place Playoff
Toss: Singapore won the toss and chose to bat first.
Singapore put up a competitive score thanks to crucial contributions from all over their batting order. Surendran Chandramohan (31) and Navin Param (23) both contributed crucial runs. However, it was Manpreet Singh’s 47-run knock in 37 deliveries that helped Singapore reach 140/7 in 20 overs. In his innings, Singh would hit two sixes and one four. Benjamin Ward (2/17) and Dominic Blampied (2/22) were standouts for Jersey.
In response, Jersey would cruise through the chase for much of the contest. Nicholas Greenwood would get Jersey’s chase started quickly, scoring 48 runs in only 26 pitches. Asa Tribe, who contributed 36 runs off only 26 deliveries, would provide him with excellent support. Jonty Jenner would then put the finishing touches on a six-wicket victory for Jersey, scoring a quickfire 21-ball 39*.
Jersey finished seventh in the tournament with a victory.
