HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, is a virus that attacks the body's immune system, weakening its ability to fight off infections and diseases. If left untreated, HIV can progress to AIDS, or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome — the final stage of HIV infection that can be life-threatening.
